I'm a Chinese native speaker, and sure I speak quite fluent Chinese, not so beautiful or speaking with deep voice...
Those days SCIM doesn't work on my laptop, and I uninstalled it last week because it ate up all my memory. After uninstallation, I can't input Chinese at all, so English became my major language both at work or chat with friends.
I just posted a blog, saying about my mistake copying a 64 bit google toolbar to my 32 bit version computer, and then google bookmark can't be used. My mistake actually is caused by my firefox profile was overwritten carelessly.
When writing the blog, I was blocked by the word overwritten. In Chinese, we use "fu gai" to refer to the file was overwritten, but when I looked up all available dictionaries online (from Google to icibao (provided by Kingsoft, the most popular electronic dictionary provider in China), I can only get words like cover with, mantle, lay over, overcast, etc. Though I didn't know the keyword I needed, I know clearly that these words don't match my needs. I tried several times, which cost around 20 mins to find the word. I gave up them, and asked my colleague Paul about the problem.
Within one min, I get the work "Overwritten". Paul is good at English (might be also other languages. He claimed he knows Japanese, French, and Dutch), so sometimes I can queried from him. He's always quite busy with other staff, so how to solve this problem when I need an expert?
Yes, community can help that. Community is part of our project. We hope people from all around the word can help each other on second language learning. When we need the words, we send a request with native language, and people who are skilled at second language or whose native language is others' second language can help find the right keyword, like my ask to Paul.
We do think communication is everywhere. The final purpose of learning a second language is to use it in our life or work like posting a blog or drafting an email to your workmates. Don't let a keyword block you, and please stay tuned for more on this project.
We'll be back soon.
